New Year Bathroom Renovation Trends: What Homeowners Need to Know

As we step into the new year, it's time to refresh our living spaces, and what better place to start than the bathroom? The latest 2024 U.S. Houzz Bathroom Trends Study reveals exciting insights into what homeowners are prioritizing in their bathroom renovations. Let's dive into the top trends that will shape bathroom designs in the coming year.

  1. Prioritizing Personal Needs Over Resale Value

The study shows a significant shift in homeowners' focus. More people are renovating their bathrooms to suit their personal needs rather than considering resale value. This trend reflects a desire for long-term comfort and functionality in our homes.

  1. Increased Spending on Renovations

Bathroom renovations are seeing a rise in investment. The median spend on all bathroom remodels has increased by 11%, from $13,500 in 2022 to $15,000 in 2023. This increase is evident in both major remodels (involving shower upgrades) and minor remodels. At Floorzz, we continuously add new products for every budget. Whether it's flooring for your guest bathroom or tile for the entire shower, we have you covered.

  1. Aging-in-Place Features Gain Popularity

Nearly two-thirds of homeowners (64%) are incorporating special needs features during their bathroom renovations. The top priority is accommodating aging household members, both for current and future needs. Popular additions include:

  • Grab bars (64% of those addressing aging in place)
  • Non-slip flooring (57%)
  • Curbless showers (38%)
  1. The Rise of Wet Rooms

Wet rooms are becoming increasingly popular, with 13% of upgraded bathrooms now featuring this design. Homeowners cite better use of space (66%) as the primary reason for choosing a wet room, followed by universal design (39%) and aesthetics (33%).

  1. Color Trends: White Takes the Lead

White dominates as the color of choice for most bathroom features, except for vanities, where wood (26%) is preferred over white (22%). Off-white is gaining ground as the second most popular color, surpassing gray in most categories.

  1. Eclectic Style on the Rise

While transitional, contemporary, and modern styles remain the top three choices, eclectic style is gaining popularity. It now matches the steady 5% popularity of farmhouse style.

  1. Sustainability Matters

More than 4 in 5 homeowners (84%) are choosing sustainable features in their bathroom renovations. The top sustainable choices include:

  • LED lightbulbs (55%)
  • Water-efficient fixtures (41%)
  • Timeless design elements (35%)
  1. Bathtub Trends: Alcove Tubs Make a Comeback

While freestanding flat-bottom tubs are still popular, their dominance is decreasing. Alcove bathtubs have seen a significant increase in popularity, rising by 15 percentage points year over year to 39%.

  1. Tile Remains King for Showers

Tile continues to be the most popular choice for shower flooring (87%) and walls (83%). Rectangular tiles are the top choice for shower walls, while floor tile preferences vary between rectangular, hexagonal, and square shapes.

  1. High-Tech Toilets on the Rise

Specialty features in toilets are in high demand. More than 2 in 5 homeowners (41%) are installing toilets with special features, including bidet seats, self-cleaning functionality, and heated seats.

As you plan your bathroom renovation for the new year, consider these trends to create a space that's not only stylish but also functional and sustainable.
